(Eliud Kipchoge)

ELIUD
To be successful in sport
is not a chance.
It's a choice.
If you want to be successful,
you need to choose.
But to chooce well,
you must know who you are,
and what you stand for,
where you want to go,
and why you want to get there.
Sport is actually a mutual interest,
and the moment you train with people
then you get fitter than when you train by yourself.
In training, it's teamwork.
It's breakfast for Africans.
We have only bread and tea, that's enough.
After a big run, we have tae.
We exchange ideas.
It's one way of relaxing.
they are not happy because Tottenham won last night.
Tottenham are going to be beaten!
By who?!
Man united!
How?
And there is a guy for Chelsea there, and...
Training and living together is one thing at a time.
The moment you train together,
that's one way to actually get a big bond
whereby you are together and
you can do anything and you'll be happy.
Yes, you can come in.
That's a photo of my children.
When they are just enjoying a run at home.
This one i sthe hand of Sandy Bodecker.
He is one of the Senior Vice Presidents of Nike.
but he passed away three months ago.
This picture was taken in Monza.
This is Mark Parker - he is a Chairman adn CEO for Nike.
So this is our boss!
This is a famous writer, Paulo Coelho.
He says "If you want to be successful,
you must respect one rule."
and that rule is : "Never lie to yourself."
When the season is going on like now
I am here from Monday to Saturday morning.
Yes, then I go back home to see my kids and my wife.
It's really a big sacrifice, and you know.
and you need really-
When you want to work well, to inspire
or get a big success,
then you need to sacrifice yourself.
Success come with sacrifice.
You sacrifice more, you get more success.
You sacrifice little, you get little succcess.
You know, we're helping each other.
The moment you have a lot of energy,
and somebody else has a small amount of energy,
you can actually push each other.
At the and of the day,
all of you have achieved some more than
what you would have achieved when you are alone,
I trust that in the future,
the marathon will actually be a team effort.
Maybe in the futere, in ten years time,
the marathon will be like cycling.
It will be like Formula 1.
So I think at that time the sport will be really interesting.
We decided last year for everybody to plant a tree.
So all of these are...
All these are the athletes, around.
So when we get a new person,
we get a space to plant a tree.
That's Laban Korir.
This is Abdi.
This is my tree.
Here
It was planted on 29th March 2018.
It grows very slowly, but
within ten or fifteen years,
this tree will be big and
young people can come,
and they can know that
people like me were here some time back,
and they can actually copy and
actually follow our steps.
How often do i see them?
Normally three days in a week.
even Saturdays, days off, all times of day.
Eliud has got one advantage.
It's that he understands, really.
what is expected of him as an athlete.
So he's able to follow
the routines, the programmes, that are set
for preventative measures.
So once you work that one out,
well, they've got to get up and
get running.
You know, the moment you...
you just come for trainging
and go to training then go, then
there is nothing which can make you guys actually stay together,
So training together
and living together, having breakfast together,
having lunch together,
watching TV, discussing, having dinner together
Taht's one way to really bring
your thoughts to come actually nearer to the whole team.
This is rice, potatoes, beef and chapati.
Together we go far.
For those few remarks.
ladies and gentlemen,
I say thank you,
So, thank you everyone,
Thank you so much, thank you, thank you,
Coaches,
management team,
my fellow athletes, good morning,
I can't describe how to say thank you,
for 2018,
2017, 2018 has been really great,
and without you guys
I could not manage to run a World Record.
Without you guys I could not manage
to win eleven out of twelve marathons.
But that said, understand
I belived that
in a philosophy whereby
you are climbing a tree,
and immedlately you get
a branch.
If you hold your branch and you aim for the next one -
so what has happened in 2018.
we have crossed that.
Let us forget 2018.
let us invest all of our thoughts,
all of our minds,
let us convert all of our minds to 2019.
Let us not actually talk of keeping a lot of success
for what you've got in 2018.
Let us convert our successes
which we received in 2018.
to actually go through to 2019.
For those few remarks,
I'm saying thank you.
To have a really great and positive team
is really important.
Like what we have now with my training mates.
Without them I cannot train well.
Without them I couldn't run a World Record.
Remember now, in here, in our camp, we normally say
one percent of the whole team
is really more important
than 100 percent of yourself.
That's teamwork,
and without teamwork
then you cannot go anywhere.
